The Best is Yet to Come: A Holy Week Post

Our guest blogger today is Don Garces.

The beautiful thing about Easter is that we know what’s coming, we know how the whole Passion story ends…there’s no surprises. But imagine the disciples at that time, their best friend and their only hope for a better future was just killed by their enemies. Even though Jesus tried to tell them he would be raised again, it was too crazy for them to grasp. So for them, their dreams were crushed, their hopes ripped to pieces, the better future…gone forever. Friday meant going back to their old miserable lives without the most amazing person they had ever known.

The moment Jesus was resurrected on the following Sunday changed everything for them, and it changed everything for us. Easter is not only a reminder and a celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection, it is reminder for us that even though we feel like we are in our darkest days, ahead of us is a victory. Even though we feel we are without hope, ahead of us is a bright and glorious future.

sunday-is-coming_t_nvI remember hearing Pastor Tony Campolo speak at a conference, and he shared how he was a part of a small African American Baptist church. Once a year they would have a “preach-off”, basically different pastors would preach one right after another, competing with each other. During his turn, he gave it all he got and the crowd was into it. By the time he ended, he was sure no one could beat him. But the older pastor went up after him and blew him away by saying a single phrase over and over again. By the end of the hour, the entire congregation was on their feet in enthusiasm and excitement. He kept repeating over and over,

“It’s Friday, but Sunday’s coming.”

“It’s Friday and my Jesus is dead on a cross…but Sunday’s coming”

“It’s Friday, but Sunday’s coming.”

Over and over again, until all he had to do was yell the word “Friday!” and the entire congregation would yell back “Sunday’s Coming!”

It’s Friday and your job, your finances and your hopes are sinking…but Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday and your marriage is falling a part…but Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday and you feel like everything around you is collapsing…but Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday and you feel so alone…but Sunday’s coming

At our church, we tend to hear this phrase a lot, “the best is yet to come”, and it’s so true when you have Jesus in your life.

It’s Friday…
