Dwight Howard and the Dream

Mentoring.

In a nutshell, that is what the Houston Rockets management planned when it recently hired former NBA great Hakeem Olajuwon to train their big men.

In training for the Rockets’ big men, that easily includes recently acquired All-Star Center Dwight Howard, who “landed” at Houston after a brief one-year stint with the still stunned Los Angeles Lakers.

Fan interest has sure risen further at the Rockets camp with the arrival of “Superman” who has had a season of struggles brought about by his shoulder injury and failure to adjust to the coaching transition of the Lakers early in the 2013 NBA season.

With Olajuwon’s help though, big guys like Howard could learn from the player they used to call “the Dream” because of his silky smooth post moves and spin moves to the basket.

Like Howard and Co., we all need someone who could mentor us.

We all need people who could guide us, train us and teach us in various points in life.

Actually, Howard sought the help of Olajuwon back in 2011 when he was still playing for the Orlando Magic. The 6’10” sought the assistance of Olajuwon so he could develop a new repertoire of moves in the paint.

I’ve been writing since 1997, the year I earned my college degree at the University of Santo Tomas, but I just can’t say “I am made” as a writer. I still read books, write stories, write blogs and seek the help of my colleagues and my editors at Spin.ph so I could get better and better in my profession.

In my Christian faith, I thank God for my pastors and even friends in church who are there to speak to my life and help me in my marriage, in my role as a father and even as a spiritual leader to my family, among others.

As long as we’re alive, we need mentors, people who could be our guide and people who could point to us what areas we need to improve on and area of strength we have, which we can continue to do.

Proverbs 27:17 says, As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Do you have mentors in your marriage? In your life as a single professional? Student life? Parenting? If you don’t have one, I highly encourage you to go speak to someone whom you highly respect and whom you know can help you grow in these various areas of life.
