Somebody called the other day at 2am. He was on the “family crossroads”–
either he COMFORTABLY BUT UNHAPPILY STAYS with the family biz or… he MOVES OUT to find his heart.
I told him:
1. “DO YOU HAVE THE GUTS TO LEAVE?” Because many who knew they should have left DIDN’T.
2. “IF YES, LEAVE RESPECTFULLY.” It is easiest to leave with an angry & bitter heart.
Years ago, I found myself disagreeing with my Dad’s wishes in the family business. It was hard for me as a self-righteous, inexperienced boy to take a stand against a hard-working, self-made man who provided for me my whole life.
But I knew I had to take another path.
I felt like the worst Chinese boy on the planet…
But I made a vow that INSPITE of our disagreement, I would SEE HIM EVERY WEEK. He wasn’t too happy with the idea.
It was akward at first, but slowly with time, we talked more, laughed more, & hugged more. Our “dinner dates” started & ended with a big, long, bear hug and a tender kiss on Papa’s cheek:)
A decade later, Dad and I STILL have taken different roads, but our relationship has gotten sweeter and sweeter:)
Are you on a crossroads with family?
Ask good mentors advice, pray, take courage to DISAGREE LOVINGLY & RESPECTFULLY.(This is not easy, so be open to ask & give forgiveness for shouting, sarcasm, & other hurtful words)
Oftentimes, parents feel UNLOVED & UNRESPECTED when their child DISAGREES with them.
But the key is to CONTINUOUSLY PURSUE THE RELATIONSHIP inspite DISAGREEING ON THE ISSUE:) It always works out IN THE LONG RUN:)
Take heart my friend! May you NOT LOSE FAMILY in FINDING YOUR ROAD:)
