When Fathers are Absent

Malachi 4:5-6 English Standard Version (ESV)

5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 6 And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”

God makes a big deal about fathers. Fathers you have to understand that our role is a BIG role. We cannot abdicate our role as fathers. In fact, the Scripture tells us that in the last days, God will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers. To not experience this is to bring a curse upon the land.

The relationship between parents and children is directly connected to the nation being blessed. I don’t have to go too far to see this reality. We have a foundation in San Juan that reaches out to the underprivileged in our city. Majority or I might even be safe to say 100% of the kids who go to the foundation have dysfunctional homes. They have absentee fathers, fathers who beat them up, drunk fathers, drug addicted fathers and fathers who molest them.

Douglas Wilson in his book Father Hunger: Why God Calls Men to Love and Lead Their Families  said,

” When there is a fundamental estrangement between fathers and children, the result of that unhappy mess will be that God will come and strike the land with a curse. In short, when fathers are blessed, the land is blessed. When fathers are cursed, the land is cursed.

To all single men reading this blog, you have a big role to play in the future. You will be fathers. Prepare yourselves now with the task of raising kids who would fear the Lord. Dads, we have a role to play, a big role. Let us take godly, biblical fatherhood back in our family.
