Positioned to Receive Wisdom

Proverbs 2

1 My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, 2 making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; 3 yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, 4 if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

Positioning. It is a very important principle whether in marketing, career advancement, basketball, picture taking (hehe). The same way we position ourselves in areas of life to get what we desire, there is one positioning that we cannot neglect. The positioning to get wisdom.

How do we get wisdom? Proverbs 2 gives us some positions to get wisdom:

1. Position to Receive. There must be an attitude of wanting it and treasuring whatever wisdom we get – whether solicited or unsolicited. I was having lunch with a seasoned pastor last week and he said, “Dennis can I give you a feedback on how the worship service was in your church.” Those are precious words. Priceless feedback. Coming from someone who has been pastoring a church for decades – what he observed and shared would help improve our worship services every Sunday. We need to be positioned to receive feedback and treasure it.

2. Inclined ears and heart. To get wisdom, you can’t just hear. You have to listen attentively and put wisdom into your heart. Is your heart open to receive wisdom. Proverbs says that fools despise wisdom. The problem is sometimes we are blinded by the fact that we are fools because we despise wisdom. Classic example is when my wife would tell me something that has a lot of wisdom but I won’t receive it because it comes from her. And then somebody comes up and says the same thing and I receive it. What was the problem or should I say WHO IS THE PROBLEM? ME!!! When my wife was sharing her wisdom I was not positioned to receive it because of pride.

3.  Seek and Ask Questions. You want wisdom ask for it. Children learn fast because they ask. When they don’t know something they ask. That is why it is easy to teach kids new lessons. Why? They are positioned to get wisdom and knowledge because they desperately want answers.

If you want to get impartation of wisdom – ask to be mentored and coached. Have coffee with a man of wisdom. I blogged about the subject: HOW TO FIND MENTORS
