LA Tenorio and Inner Peace

Last February, since his endgame lapses that cost Barangay Ginebra Game Five (76-79), LA Tenorio admitted the need for some “jolting” and “wake-up” call from God.

1081964_10151581332422019_2104388944_n“Dalawang bagay lang yan eh, good and bad comments (from people), I need to know them… parang it’s (Game Five endgame lapses) a wake up call sa akin ng Diyos,” shared Tenorio, shortly after bouncing back from his endgame lapses in Game Five with a 16-point-three-rebound-three-assist performance to help Ginebra snatch Game 6, 94-91 and forge a winner-take-all match against San Mig on Wednesday.

So humbling was that experience that Tenorio said he did a lot of soul-searching after the game night’s boo-boos, seeking refuge from God in the church on Sunday.

“Nagdasal lang talaga ako. Iyung before the game, I passed by the church, yun lang ang naging lakas ng loob ko para to get back at the game,” he said.

After his moment of solitude with God, Tenorio came with this realization: “I need to go back to basics sa good things na binigay Niya.  Siguro parang, ‘medyo bumaba ka muna ng konti. Isipin mo muna ang tao sa paligid mo before ang sarili mo,’” he added.

Tenorio was subject of social network discussions after his endgame lapses.

Solid Tenorio fans supported him, while anti-Ginebra fans blamed him for the Gin Kings’ loss.

It sure is hard to be in Tenorio’s shoes on a Saturday night, when thousands of basketball fans would wish the Gin Kings win Game 5 to go ahead of the series, 3-2.

But like Tenorio, we all for sure have let people down at some point in our life.

  • Maybe you had a failing mark in three subjects, and you wonder how you would break that news to your dad, who has been tryng to make both ends meet just to send you to school?
  • Perhaps, you lost your cool during an argument with a friend and you started tweeting things you would later on, regret…
  • Or you spent all your hard earned savings for a new business venture, which, months later, didn’t turn out well and you ended up losing all your money.

Experiences like these tend to rob us of the peace and joy.

But what we do when we are starting in such kind of a situation?

LA-Tenorio-300x256I’m reminded of a passage in John 16:33, which says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! Ihave overcome the world.”

Are you going through chaotic times, just like Tenorio had over the weekend? Well, good news! We can find that inner peace (amidst chaos) in Jesus, alone.  For in reality, having new gadgets, being in the company of your friends or having all the money in the world won’t grant you lasting peace. but only in Jesus can we find that lasting peace. That in a nutshell, was what Jesus was telling His disciples, shortly before He was to be betrayed by Judas.

In reality, we will all go through trouble (for we are living in an imperfect world), yet, we can still have that “undisturbed peace” when we allow Christ to be our foundation– when we remind ourselves that He will never leave us nor forsake us, and when we make a decision to trust Him amidst the chaos we face in life.
