Loving the Whore

I know the title might shock you but this is a note I wrote in my time with the Lord. I am not telling us to go find a prostitute and propose marriage to her but in the Old Testament, God commanded a prophet by the name of Hosea to do so to mirror the kind of love he has for us. Let me share to you the story:

HOSEA 1
2 When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the Lord.” 3 So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

At this time, the Israelites were rebelling against God and worshipping different gods. It was a chaotic time for the Israelites. They were ungrateful of the love, mercy and protection the Lord gave them and instead prostituted themselves to other gods.

And the Lord said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. And on that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.”

She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the Lord said to him, “Call her name No Mercy,[a] for I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel, to forgive them at all. But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.”

When she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son. And the Lord said, “Call his name Not My People,[b] for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”

Hosea had three kids with the prostitute and names them Jezreel ( which reminds the people of the bloodshed that happened in Jezreel because of their disobedience, and the other was named NO MERCY because God’s grace and love was being tested and the other was name NOT MY PEOPLE as God is about to disown His people because the people have disowned Him.

It’s a pretty bleak place to be. To live without the mercy and the assurance of God’s love and presence. We don’t want to live there but sometimes we do choose to live there. Not a great choice but we do so anyway. As God’s children, we go through seasons of rebellion and sin and test the limits of God. And God knows and God sees and God feels and sometimes He is betrayed because of our choices. But I thank God that Hosea does not end there. In fact, it is just chapter one. Look at what happens next.

10  Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them,“Children of the living God.” 11 And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint for themselves one head. And they shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

God prophesies and tells us of a promise of things to come. He said, Israel will be like the sand of the sea. They will be powerful. If at this time I declared that I don’t know them – I will now declare that they are my children and not only that but they will be great again in the land where there ancestors were murdered.

You see God is a God who redeems. He does not leave us where we are. Yes we make foolish decisions and sin against God and we deserve His wrath but He turns things around and wants us to be transformed.

I am glad to worship a God who is patient and gracious to me in spite of my sin. It is in His love that I am transformed.

Men, you might be living in sin and rebellion against God and you might feel there is no hope. Let Hosea give us hope that God is a turn around specialist and there is redemption available for us to be called Children of the Living God again!
