Have you ever heard the phrase, “Have you accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior?, because if you do you will go to heaven.”

ticket_smWell I have a problem with this phrase – not because it is wrong but it is incomplete.

You see I grew up with this kind of thinking. I thought that the gospel of Jesus Christ should be accepted so that I can get to heaven. No need to see some evidence of life change aside from the regular attendance to church and occasionally giving money to the church and the poor.

In short, when we treat Jesus as a ticket to heaven, it will never change us. Faith in Christ transforms us.

I remember hearing a different take on the Bible when Pastor Ferdie Cabiling preached in our school. It was like a man teaching something new but it wasn’t new – it was just uncomfortable to hear – some of the things he preached that defined my Christianity:

“If you are here today and you say that you are a Christian – then stop playing games with God.”

“Some of you have been playing church for the longest time – you know who you are.”

Well, after hearing that – I knew God was speaking to me. It was time for the lost sheep to come back to Christ. I have been running away from God, I am a sinner who has heard the gospel repeatedly but it had no effect on me. This was my time, this was my moment. I had to face the music that apart from Christ I am nothing. Christ was calling me back. He revealed to me that day that He was more than just a ticket to heaven.

John 10:10New International Version (NIV)

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

He was a life giver, he was the ultimate transformer. He can transform a rotten religious guy and save him from his hypocrisy and sin. It was time I surrender and give my life to Christ. The gospel was presented to me. That day I realized I was fully known and fully loved by God. He knows my sin and He chose to love me to the point of dying for my sin but He didn’t end there. His love transformed me. Made me new and gave me a new assignment:

2 Corinthians 5:17-19New International Version (NIV)

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

As I got reconciled with God, He now commissioned us to make disciples and reconcile others to him. It is a commission I take seriously. I was radically saved and transformed and I can’t keep my mouth shut. He loved me and He saved me!!!!
