Jeremiah 17:5-8The Message (MSG)
5-6 God’s Message: “Cursed is the strong one who depends on mere humans, Who thinks he can make it on muscle alone and sets God aside as dead weight. He’s like a tumbleweed on the prairie, out of touch with the good earth. He lives rootless and aimless in a land where nothing grows.
7-8 “But blessed is the man who trusts me, God, the woman who sticks with God. They’re like trees replanted in Eden, putting down roots near the rivers— Never a worry through the hottest of summers, never dropping a leaf,Serene and calm through droughts, bearing fresh fruit every season.
It is a life saving lesson: A man who depends on his own strength would be fruitless. Don’t think our muscles can make it. A body of muscles won’t mean a thing when they are faced with challenges that goes beyond physical. We are fascinated with muscles as a nation. I’m not saying muscles are wrong, in fact I lift weights regularly to build my muscles – but there is a far more important muscles we need to build – our spiritual muscles.
Jeremiah differentiates a man who trusts in his own ability and a man who depends on God. A man who finds strength in God is a man who is planted near the river. The roots grow deeper and he never dies no matter what season he is going through. There is peace and shalom (nothing missing and nothing broken) for a man whose God is the Lord.
