1 SAMUEL 17:34-37
34 But David persisted. “I have been taking care of my father’s sheep and goats,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, 35 I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. 36 I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! 37 The LORD, who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will rescue me from this Philistine!” Saul finally consented. “All right, go ahead,” he said. “And may the LORD be with you!”
When Saul heard that David wanted to fight Goliath, he laughed it off. It was a crazy idea. David was a sacrificial offering if he fights Goliath. But again, when a radical disciple understands that there is a cause – he will persist. A man with a cause knows his mission and is prepared for his/her mission. He never backs down from an opportunity to fulfill his destiny. He takes it by force. It is not some foolish talk for David – he was preparing for this moment.
Sisters reading this – I am reminded of Esther, who said, she was born for such a time as this. Everything that has happened in her life was setting her up for this big day when God calls her to fulfill her God-given call and destiny. It was not going to be simple – it was a deadly mission. Esther even asked her people to fast for her to the big day when she would come before the king to ask her to spare the life of her countrymen.
Dangerous people are not lazy people. They tend their fields. They are faithful to their call. They work hard and they are faithful in what they do. David was convincing Saul that he was faithful in tending his flock and when lions and bears would show up – he will not run or back away from a fight – he would engage the enemy.
David was saying I AM READY! I WAS BORN FOR THIS!
This is my moment. I am taking the challenge to fight! If my God, who rescued me from my small fights with the lions and the bears – that same God, will help me slay Goliath.
