The Sin of Passivity

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. – Edmund Burk

That night when I heard that quote from Edmund Burke, I made a decision to live a life that would make a difference in the lives of others. I got down on my knees and repented of my sin of apathy and passivity.

David when he saw Goliath asked the question, “Is there not a cause?” I hope the same question resonates in your soul – is there not a cause for me to fling my life towards the purposes of God in my life and in my generation?

“It’s easy to forget that the failure in Adam’s leadership in the garden was passivity, not aggression. Adam failed to cultivate the garden. Adam failed to keep the weeds out. The weed of evil crawled into the garden in the form of a serpent.” (Geiger and Peck, loc 1008)

Adam should have sliced that serpent’s head when it was tempting his wife. Adam should have stepped up when he knew the serpent was tempting them to move away from God. He needed to move in holy aggression towards sin. I blogged about how Paul commanded us to put to death the sin that tries to operate in our lives, click here. That is the action that we men must make.

From Adam’s passivity, sin entered. Eve had to labor in pain, Adam had to toil, Cain murdered Abel, men started to build a tower to reach God and so on and so forth.

Romans 5:12

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men[a] because all sinned—

God made a plan. And the plan took aggression. He sends His one and only Son Jesus. And the mandate was clear.

1 John 3:8-9

Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.

Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. Through one man sin entered the world, but through one man, Jesus, redemption came.

Romans 5:17

17 For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.

Paul uses war terminology to describe what Christ did. As death ruled over mankind, Jesus came to triumph over sin and death. No wonder God calls the church to forcefully take hold of the kingdom of God. God wants to see righteous aggression to rise up again in the churches.

Matthew 11:12

12 And from the time John the Baptist began preaching until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing,[a] and violent people are attacking it.

Men, let’s repent from passivity and prepare for the war ahead of us. Let’s put on some holy aggression to fight the sins of this world and stand up as men of God!
